UAE Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

All UAE civil documents are in Arabic. There is a big difference between UAE national documents and expat documents. National documents come from the federal civil registry. Expat documents come from their home country, and UAE authorities may have registered them. The UAE joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2021. This guide explains the key documents and what UKVI needs you to translate.

UAE civil documents come from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). It used to be called the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship. Emirate-level civil courts handle civil registration for UAE nationals — births, marriages and deaths. Abu Dhabi courts cover Abu Dhabi, Dubai courts cover Dubai, and so on. The UAE joined the Apostille Convention in 2021. The Digital Legalisation Authority (DLA) now handles legalisation.

UAE Nationals vs UAE Expats: Different Registries

Over 85% of UAE residents are expats. If you are an expat who has lived and worked in the UAE, your birth and marriage certificates came from your home country. UAE authorities may have attested them. Those home-country documents are the ones you need to translate, not UAE ones. Documents the UAE itself issues (Emirates ID, residence visa, work permit) are in Arabic and do need certified translation. Always tell your translator which documents are UAE-issued and which are home-country documents attested by the UAE.

Key UAE Documents for UK Visa Translation

شهادة الميلاد (Birth Certificate — UAE Nationals)

The emirate-level civil registry (the courts) issues UAE national birth certificates. They show the child's name, date and place of birth, and the parents' names and Emirates ID numbers. It is all in Arabic. UKVI needs a certified Arabic-to-English translation.

هوية الإمارات (Emirates ID)

The Emirates ID (Hawiyat al-Imarat) is the national ID card for UAE nationals and residents alike. It shows the holder's name, ID number, date of birth and nationality in Arabic, and sometimes in English too. Even when English appears, we still advise a certified translation so UKVI can read every field.

خلاصة القيد (Family Book)

The UAE Family Book (Khulasat al-Qayd) goes to UAE national families. It lists every member of the household. Visa applicants use it to prove family relationships. UKVI needs a certified translation of every relevant page.

Marriage Certificate (عقد الزواج)

UAE national marriages are registered with the emirate-level courts. Which court depends on the emirate: Abu Dhabi courts or Dubai courts, for example. The court then issues a marriage certificate in Arabic. For Islamic marriages, the marriage contract (عقد الزواج) is the main document. It needs a certified translation for a UKVI spouse visa.

DLA and Apostille (UAE since 2021)

The The UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so UAE documents need full legalisation rather than an apostille. The Digital Legalisation Authority (DLA) handles apostille requests online. An apostille is not a translation. You still need a separate certified English translation for UKVI. The DLA adds the apostille digitally, and you can check it online.

Investor / Golden Visa Documents

UAE Golden Visa holders may need to translate their UAE residency papers and investment certificates for a UK visa. The ICP or the relevant emirate authority issues these in Arabic, so they need certified translation.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am an expat who lived in Dubai. My birth certificate was issued in my home country and attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Which document needs translating?

Your home-country birth certificate is the document to translate, from its original language into English. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation stamp on the back may need translating and noting too. The stamp confirms the document is genuine. It does not change what the translation says.

My Emirates ID has both Arabic and English text. Does UKVI require a certified translation?

If your Emirates ID shows all the key fields in English (name, date of birth, ID number), UKVI may accept it without a formal translation. But the Arabic often says more than the English, or spells names differently. Address fields are a common example. A certified translation removes that doubt. We advise getting one so the caseworker has no reason to query your file.
