The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) regulates 15 health professions in the UK. Physiotherapy is one of them. If you qualified abroad, you register through the International Application route. This route asks for a lot of paperwork. You must send translated academic records, clinical evidence, and letters from your home regulator.

Why HCPC and Not NMC or GMC?

Nurses register with the NMC. Doctors register with the GMC. Pharmacists register with the GPhC. Physiotherapists register with the HCPC. The HCPC also covers occupational therapists, speech & language therapists, paramedics, dieticians, radiographers, podiatrists, and others. The same rules for international applications apply to all of them.

The Clinical Placement Log

The HCPC asks for proof of at least 1,000 hours of clinical practice during your programme. Most overseas applicants hold these records in their own language. So they need translating. Here is what matters:

What HCPC Looks For

  • Dates of each placement (start and end)
  • Placement site (hospital, clinic, community setting)
  • Clinical specialty (orthopaedic, neurological, cardio-respiratory, paediatric)
  • Hours completed and supervisor name/signature
  • Clinical competencies assessed

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HCPC registration required to practise as a physiotherapist in the UK?

Yes. "Physiotherapist" is a protected title. You can work as a physiotherapy assistant without registering. But to work as a physiotherapist, you must be on the HCPC register.

How long does HCPC international assessment take?

Usually 3–6 months, counted from the day you send a complete application. Translations for a typical pack take 2–5 working days.

Does CSP (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy) require separate translation?

CSP membership is separate from HCPC registration, but it asks for similar proof. Translations made for the HCPC usually meet CSP rules as well.

My programme was conducted in English — do I still need translation?

If your certificates, transcripts and registration papers are issued in English, you need no translation. If you were taught in English but the papers are in another language, you still need translation.
