More than 140,000 Nepali people live in the UK, and the Gurkha link goes back generations. Nepal has a clear civil registration system. But its documents use the Devanagari script, two calendars (Bikram Sambat and Gregorian), and family naming customs. That is why UKVI applications need a certified translation. This guide covers every common document type.

UK Visa Routes Common for Nepali Applicants

Gurkha & Family Routes

Ex-Gurkha settlement and dependant family applications need discharge papers, birth certificates, and proof of relationship. All of it must be translated to UKVI standards.

Skilled Worker & Health & Care

Nepali nurses, care workers, and hospitality staff apply often. They need translated education certificates, NNC registration, and work experience letters.

Student Visas

You need certified translations of SLC/SEE certificates, +2 transcripts, and bachelor's degrees from Tribhuvan, Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Purbanchal universities.

Spouse / Partner

Hindu, Buddhist, and civil weddings in Nepal all produce the same central Vivaha Darta certificate. It needs translation.

The Bikram Sambat Calendar Challenge

Nepali civil documents use the Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar. It runs about 56.7 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. A certified translation must show the original BS date and the Gregorian date next to it.

Converting Dates

BS 2050 Baisakh 1 = 13 April 1993 AD. The months do not line up neatly with Gregorian months. So a professional translator converts each date on its own, instead of using one fixed formula.

Name Conventions in Nepal

Many Nepali names join a personal name with a caste or ethnic surname (Gurung, Magar, Rai, Sherpa, Tamang, Shrestha, Thapa). The order on a Nagarikta is often different from the order on a passport. UKVI caseworkers need the names to match, so a translator should check that:

  • The full name matches the spelling in your current passport
  • Any middle names or maiden names appear where they matter
  • Your father's or husband's name is spelled the same way in every document

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Nepali documents need apostille before translation?

No. Nepal is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Nepali documents cannot be apostilled. Instead, UKVI accepts Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation or Nepali embassy legalisation, together with a certified translation.

Should Devanagari script be preserved?

Yes. The original script stays visible, either as a copy of the source page or as a spelling note. The English translation sits alongside it. UKVI prefers translations that clearly mirror the original.

Is Gurkha discharge documentation different?

Yes. British and Indian Army Gurkha discharge certificates are written in both English and Nepali. A certified translation still helps if any Nepali text matters to your application.

Can I translate my own Nepali documents?

No. UKVI requires an independent certified translator who has no personal connection to you.
