Iraqi Documents Translation for UK Visa Applications: 2026 Guide
Certified translation of Iraqi birth certificates, National ID Cards, Civil Status ID, marriage contracts, school and degree certificates, and KRG (Kurdistan Region) documents. For UK asylum, family reunion, and Skilled Worker applications.
Iraq runs two systems of civil records: federal (Arabic) and KRG (Arabic/Kurdish). That makes things harder for UK visa applicants. Documents were also issued under several different governments (Ba'athist, transitional, current). Each era used its own format. UKVI caseworkers know this, and they are flexible with asylum and family reunion cases. But you still need certified translation.
UK Visa Routes for Iraqi Applicants

KRG vs Federal Iraqi Documents
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) issues its own documents. They are usually in both Arabic and Kurdish, and they carry KRG emblems. Most come from Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, or Duhok. If you are from the Kurdistan region, expect the following:
- UKVI treats KRG documents as valid Iraqi documents
- You need both the Arabic and the Kurdish (Sorani or Kurmanji) text translated
- We translate transcripts from the University of Sulaimani, Salahaddin, and Koya University every week
- Some documents carry both federal Iraq and KRG stamps — your translator must show both
Flexibility in Asylum / Humanitarian Cases
Caseworker Flexibility
UKVI knows that asylum and family reunion applicants may have documents that are damaged, incomplete, or in an odd format. A certified translation from an independent translator still helps your case. A translator's note can explain anything that is unclear. That makes the application stronger, even when the original document is not perfect.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Iraq use apostille?
No. Iraq has not signed the Hague Apostille Convention. For UK use, Iraqi documents usually need Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation and then UK FCDO legalisation. You need a certified English translation before that.
My documents are in Kurdish Sorani — can you translate them?
Yes. We work in Sorani and Kurmanji Kurdish as well as Arabic. Tell us when you order, so we give your file to the right translator.
Are old Ba'athist-era documents still valid?
Yes, as historical proof — for example a parent's old ID. UKVI accepts them as evidence. But get a modern replacement if you can. The Unified National ID is much better.
My document has Hijri dates — will the translator convert them?
Yes. Many Iraqi documents mix Hijri and Gregorian dates. The translation shows both, with the Gregorian date marked clearly.
